Fees are reviewed every year and may differ between faculties of the same university. Always check the faculty’s page before applying, or use the study cost calculator to see the fees for your programme in your own currency.
Why do fees differ from one faculty to another?
- The faculty, not the university: in Serbia each faculty sets its own fees, so medicine at the University of Belgrade costs far more than economics at the same university.
- Language of instruction: programmes in English usually cost more, especially in medicine (for example, medicine in Belgrade costs €8,000 in English versus €2,500 in Serbian).
- State or private: state universities are cheaper but teach mostly in Serbian, while private universities offer more programmes in English at higher fees.
- City: the faculties in Niš, Kragujevac and Novi Pazar are usually cheaper than those in Belgrade.
Living costs on top of tuition
On top of tuition, you need roughly €350–750 a month in smaller cities and €450–1,100 in Belgrade, including housing, food and transport. See living costs in Serbia for details and your first-year budget in Serbia for the full picture.
Can I study in Serbia without a scholarship?
Yes, and this is what most international students do, because fees are low compared with Western Europe. If you want to cut costs further, you can apply for the government’s World in Serbia scholarship, which covers free study at a state university plus housing and meals for citizens of Non-Aligned Movement countries, or read our guide to studying for free in Serbia.

Medicine in Serbia: fees and choosing the language of study
Medicine in English costs €6,000 a year in Niš and Kragujevac, €7,000 in Novi Sad and €8,000 in Belgrade, and lasts 6 years. In Serbian it is much cheaper (for example €1,800 in Kragujevac and €2,500 in Belgrade), but it requires fluent Serbian or a preparatory language year.
Whether your medical degree is recognised in your home country is decided by the recognition authority and health authority there, and you will often need a licensing exam or extra training. See recognition of a Serbian medical degree and medicine in English or in Serbian?
Universities in Serbia by fees

- University of Novi Sad: moderate fees, with medicine in English at €7,000.
- University of Belgrade: the largest university in Serbia, with fees from €1,500 to €8,000 depending on the faculty.

How Serbian degrees are structured, and what that means for total cost
The fees in the table are annual, so your total tuition depends on how long your programme lasts. According to the official Study in Serbia platform, bachelor’s programmes last 3–4 years and carry 180–240 ECTS credits, master’s programmes last 1–2 years and carry 60–120 ECTS, and doctoral programmes last three years and require a prior bachelor’s and master’s totalling at least 300 ECTS. Integrated medical and dental programmes run for six years, as shown in the table above.
A simple way to estimate your budget: multiply the annual fee by the number of years in the programme, then add the monthly living costs for your city. Compare the same programme in more than one city, because the fee is set by each faculty and the cost of living differs a lot between Belgrade and smaller university towns.
