Study Medicine in Serbia

If you want to study medicine in Serbia, you get a relatively low-cost European option: four state medical faculties (Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and Kragujevac) teach human medicine in English for 6,000 – 8,000 euros a year over 6 years, and a much cheaper Serbian-language track exists (for example 1,800 euros at Kragujevac and 2,500 euros at Belgrade) for those who master Serbian. Admission is by an exam in biology and chemistry plus your high school grade average, and practising with the degree in your home country requires recognition and a licensing exam. This guide covers the official fees, admission requirements and the full 6-year cost.

Medicine in English or in Serbian?

  • In English: you start straight away without a language year, the fee is 6,000 – 8,000 euros, and places are limited (for example 15 places for medicine in the second round at Novi Sad in September 2026). You will still need Serbian to deal with patients during the clinical years.
  • In Serbian: much cheaper, but it usually requires level B2 in Serbian or a preparatory language year before you begin, and it is the track covered by the World in Serbia scholarship at state universities.

Is a Serbian medical degree recognised?

Serbia’s state medical faculties are accredited within the national system, and you can check them in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS). But being listed in the directory does not mean automatic recognition: practising as a doctor in your home country is decided by the recognition authority and health authority there, and a licensing exam and an internship or training year are often required. Serbia is not a member of the European Union, so working in a European country also requires recognition and exams in that country.

Scholarships for studying medicine in Serbia

The state World in Serbia scholarship is open to citizens of Non-Aligned Movement member countries. It includes a year of Serbian and then study in Serbian at a state university, with accommodation, meals, health insurance and a monthly allowance. It does not cover the paid English-language programmes, and competition for medicine is high. Application steps are in how to apply for the Serbian government scholarship.

Belgrade Faculty of Medicine: fees at a glance

The University of Belgrade’s 2025/2026 tuition table lists these annual fees for foreign nationals at the Faculty of Medicine and related faculties (source): medicine in English (360 ECTS) 8,000 euros; medicine in Serbian (360 ECTS) 2,500 euros; nursing in Serbian (240 ECTS) 2,500 euros; dentistry in English (360 ECTS) 5,000 euros; and pharmacy in English (300 ECTS) 3,500 euros. If you are choosing between English and Serbian, the gap in tuition is large, but remember the extra year of Serbian that the cheaper track usually requires.

Recognising your high school diploma first

Every bachelor’s-level applicant must have their foreign high school diploma recognised before enrolment. According to Study in Serbia, this is done through the ENIC-NARIC centre of the Qualifications Agency. You submit a request, the original diploma with a certified translation, transcripts of all completed grades and proof of payment of the fee, and the procedure usually takes up to 60 days from receipt of a complete application, so start early (source).

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to study medicine in Serbia per year?

Human medicine in English costs 6,000 euros a year at Niš and Kragujevac, 7,000 at Novi Sad and 8,000 at Belgrade, plus housing and living costs (about 345 – 1,100 euros a month depending on the city).

Can I study medicine in Serbia without speaking Serbian?

Yes, on the English track, but learning Serbian matters for clinical training and for dealing with patients. The Serbian track usually requires B2 or a language year.

What is the entrance exam?

Multiple-choice tests in biology and chemistry, plus an interview at Belgrade, combined with points from your high school grade average. The minimum at Belgrade is 31 out of 60 in the exam and interview.

Can I work while studying medicine?

Holders of a study residence permit can work without a separate work permit for up to 20 hours a week, but medicine is intensive and you should not rely on work to cover your expenses.

Does a Serbian medical degree allow me to work in Europe?

Not automatically. Serbia is outside the European Union, and working in any European country requires recognition of your degree plus language and licensing exams there.
